Move Over Law Ticket
Move Over Law is now the law in almost every state. What is the Move Over Law? This law simply requires drivers to move over to the next lane; if that is not possible to move over as much as possible and to slow down at least 20 mph below the speed limit when a police car or an emergency vehicle is stopped on the road with its emergency lights on. The law may vary slightly from state to state and have different penalties for its violation. In some states, the fine can be hundreds of dollars and can be a misdemeanor with possible jail time. Move Over Law VideoSince 1999, more than 150 law enforcement officers have been killed when struck by a car. There have been many studies to determine if the color of the emergency lights could have any effect to attract drivers toward the lights. The color of the emergency lights have been changed in many states to try to avoid these tragic accidents. However, police officers and sheriff's deputies continue to be killed by inattentive drivers and drunk drivers. Consequently, the next best solution is to require drivers to steer clear of police cars and emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road. As an Auxiliary Police Officer, I am very much in favor of this law. In fact, an Auxiliary Police Officer in my department was struck, seriously injured and nearly killed while he was directing traffic on a busy road with several police cars in the roadway with their emergency lights on.
